When it comes to motherhood, the saying is true – it does take a village. But in today’s fast-paced world, more and more, the proverbial village is fractured leaving many women unprepared and unsupported as they enter new motherhood.

The stigma attached to maternal mental health issues such as postpartum depression and anxiety are crippling.  Combined with the unrealistic expectations of women as “super moms,” the results can be dangerous.  Studies have shown that close to 20% of women suffer from post-pregnancy depression but that the majority of these cases go undiagnosed and untreated.  Women need to stick together and remember that it is only through the power of community that we can grow and become stronger.  We are a mosaic.  Showcasing the real faces of motherhood, with all of it’s unforeseen sadness, struggle, and pain, Momma Mosaic will feature photos and personal stories of women struggling, or who have struggled, with issues related to being a mother.  In addition, Momma Mosaic will feature links to events, articles and resources to assist all of us in finding and helping each other.

Modern mothers need their village back and that village starts with sharing and talking. Momma Mosaic seeks to open and change the conversation around birth and mothering in America. We don’t shy away from the raw, gritty parts of motherhood and seek to break the stigmas, stereotypes, silence and judgement around it. Being a mother is hard and we talk about the messy, tough, taboo and secretive parts as well as the magical ones.

Upon being asked about her struggles as a new mom, Chrissy Teigen said, “It can happen to anyone. I don’t want people to feel embarrassed or to feel alone. Just merely being open about it helps. This has become my open letter.”
