About Maria Carola, Founder of Momma Mosaic
"Having suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of my two children, working to help raise awareness of this all-too-common but crippling issue is extremely important to me. I found in my own struggle with postpartum depression that there was not enough discussion about it among women, healthcare practitioners or the media. I wanted to put my experience, expertise and passion to work helping the countless women and their families who are suffering silently.”
Maria has worked in Publicity and Marketing for twenty years. She began in the publishing industry as a literary publicist and then worked independently with artists, arts organizations, corporations and non-profits. PR campaigns include work with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senator Charles Schumer, Nikon Inc., Corbis, Kodak, Reuters, Unicef, Forbes, The Asia Society, and numerous authors, agents and publishing companies.
With her camera Maria was able to bring voice and awareness to issues important to her in another capacity. Photography clients include American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Covenant House, Institute for Community Living, United Way, I Love New York and Barnes & Noble. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as part of the landmark exhibit Life in the City and has been published in the United States and Europe. She is a member of the National Arts Club, the Camera Club of New York, Photographers Resource Center at Boston University, and the Publicity Club of New York.
Maria has a BA in Psychology from Goucher College and completed additional course work in Psychology at NYU. She also studied at the International Center of Photography, specializing in Documentary Photography. After college she held mental health internships in the Neuropsychology Department at Columbia University and at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
